Atari 2600 4 Switcher

Along with my Heavy Sixer, I also own an Atari 2600 model CX2600-A, which is basically a four switch model.

The CX2600-A models were introduced in 1980. They are similar to the CX2600 “Light Sixer” except where the two difficulty switches were removed from the front of the console to the back. This left four front switches.

Here are a few pictures of my Atari 2600 4-switch model:

Sometime in mid 2008 I modified my Atari 2600 four switch system and added a 2600 video enhancement board.

So why would I do that some might be thinking? I was tired of fuzzy low quality RF video from the standard RF unit.

After performing the modification, I now have crisp clean Composite Video and S-Video via a standard 4-pin mini-din connector and RCA jack:

Here is a close up showing the back of my modded 4-switch Atari 2600:

Unlike my Heavy Sixer, this unit was manufactured in Taiwan as seen by the serial number sticker on the bottom:

After Atari stopped making the Heavy Sixers, they also changed how they made the joystick controllers. The later models as seen here are not as good of quality but they do work fine:

There are many ways to tell if you have original Heavy Sixer controllers or the newer jousticks. You can tell by the word “Top” on them, the fire button also doesn’t click on the newer models and if you open them up, some of the components are different too.

If you can find them, get yourself some Heavy Sixer controllers. They are awesome. I have two that go with my Heavy Sixer.
